What is a RainGun Irrigation System?

A RainGun is a high-pressure rotating sprinkler that throws water in a wide circular arc — just like natural rainfall — covering up to 350 feet in diameter from a single nozzle. Unlike drip irrigation, a RainGun requires no per-plant piping, making it ideal for open-field crops like sugarcane, fodder, groundnut, banana and sports fields.

Thumba's RainGun systems run on 1.5 HP to 40 HP pump sets — single-phase, three-phase, solar or diesel engine-powered. With over 20 years of R&D and manufacturing from Palani, our systems are built for Indian conditions: hard water, irregular power and uneven terrain.

For low-canopy crops (vegetables, coconut nurseries), our micro and impact sprinkler systems give finer droplets, gentler coverage and complete corner-to-corner reach.

Why Farmers Choose RainGun over Drip

  • No per-plant pipes — works for any crop layout
  • No rat-bite or blockage maintenance issues
  • Covers 0.5 to 50+ acres from one pump point
  • Creates cooling micro-climate — better crop yield
  • Easy to move or extend as farm grows
  • Works with existing borewell or open well
  • Saves 30–40% water compared to flood irrigation
  • Portable models available for leased land

How to Choose the Right System

Answer these 4 questions and you'll know exactly which system to order. Our team validates your choice before dispatch.

1

Land Area

Under 1 acre, 1–5 acres or 5+ acres? This decides gun size, pipe length and the number of positions per irrigation cycle.

Browse by Area ↓
2

Crop Type

Tall crops (sugarcane, fodder) need big rainguns. Low canopy (vegetables, coconut) need micro sprinklers for full coverage without damaging plants.

Browse by Crop ↓
3

Pump Power

1.5 HP covers ~2 acres per shift. 5 HP covers 3–5 acres. 10 HP+ covers large farms. Engine and solar options for off-grid areas.

500-Acre Tea Estate Irrigation — Where Others Failed, We Succeeded

A large tea estate in Assam had attempted raingun irrigation multiple times with other vendors — each time the system failed to perform at scale. Thumba's team designed a custom high-pressure system for their 500 acres of tea plantation. The system has been running successfully, documented in full on our YouTube channel.

Common Questions

Can I use my existing borewell motor for a raingun?

Yes — if your motor is 1.5 HP or above and the water source is within 20 feet depth, we can connect our raingun system directly to it. Our team checks compatibility before dispatch.

How much area does one raingun cover?

A 1.5 HP raingun covers 65 ft radius (130 ft diameter) — roughly 0.4 acres per position. Shift it 3–4 times per day to irrigate 1.5–2 acres. Larger HP systems cover more per position.

Which is better — drip or raingun for my farm?

For open-field crops (sugarcane, fodder, groundnut), raingun wins — no per-plant piping, no blockage, no rat damage. For orchards and trellis gardens, drip irrigation is better. We advise based on your specific crop and layout.

Do you provide installation and after-sales service?

Yes. Thumba provides installation guidance, demo and after-sales support. Spare parts, replacement nozzles and pipes are available at our Palani service centre (Mon–Sat, 9 AM–6 PM).

Can the system run on solar power?

Yes. Our portable 1.5 HP systems can be configured for solar operation, making them ideal for remote farms without grid electricity. Ask our team for solar-compatible pump recommendations.

How long does a Thumba raingun system last?

Our permanent systems are designed for 15–20 years with basic maintenance. HDPE pipes have a 25-year lifespan. Nozzles and fittings may need replacement every 3–5 years depending on water quality.
