300 RainGuns Total · Since 2004 · 50+ Projects · Karanampettai, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu · Machine-Side & Road Dust Control
Since 2004, Thumba has completed more than 50 dust control projects for members of the Stone Crusher Association at Karanampettai, Coimbatore — installing RainGun systems for their stone crusher machine-side dust control, one member unit at a time.
As a mark of trust built over that relationship, the association handed Thumba a much bigger challenge: a road-side dust suppression project. Their demand was to cover more than 4.5 kilometers of roads with complete dust suppression. Thumba had completed many projects of this kind before — but this one was different. The association had only a 30,000-litre capacity underground tank for water storage, yet the water had to reach 3.5 kilometers of total distance from a single 10HP electric pumpset.
To make this workable, the main line was split across 15 control valves, each feeding 10 to 18 RainGuns. This let the association run sections of the 4.5km road independently rather than needing to power all 300 RainGuns from the network at once — matching operation to the water and pressure actually available. The RainGun pillar structures along the road were built in concrete and PVC, specifically engineered to withstand vibration from crusher machinery and heavy vehicle movement while lasting long-term.
The project was rolled out in phases — 100 RainGuns erected in 2022, followed by a further 200 RainGuns in 2026 — bringing the association's total RainGun count under Thumba's dust control systems to 300 units, all managed through GSM mobile control.

"A 30,000-litre tank and a single 10HP pumpset having to reach 3.5 kilometers of road — that combination doesn't work with one big line. Splitting it into 15 control valve zones, each running 10 to 18 RainGuns, is what let us cover the full 4.5 kilometers within the water they actually had. Twenty years of trust from this association is what led to this project landing on our desk in the first place."

A RainGun throws water in a wide rotating arc, creating a fine, rain-like spray that settles airborne dust generated by crushing machinery and vehicle movement. Since 2004, Thumba has completed more than 50 such dust control projects for member units of the Stone Crusher Association at Karanampettai, using RainGuns positioned to cover the machine-side dust sources.
The road dust control project required covering a 3.5km distance from the water source using one 10HP electric pumpset. This was engineered using correctly sized pipeline diameter and 15 control valves placed along the main line, so pressure is maintained and distributed efficiently across the full distance without needing multiple separate pumping stations.
The association's underground tank has a 30,000-litre capacity, which is also the total daily water requirement for the full 4.5km road dust suppression system. The system is designed to work within this exact daily budget, with 15 control valves allowing sections of the line to be operated selectively rather than running all 300 RainGuns across the network simultaneously.
Splitting the 4.5km main line into 15 control valve zones, each feeding 10 to 18 RainGuns, allows the operator to run one section at a time within the available water and pressure budget, rather than requiring the full 30,000-litre supply and pumping capacity to serve all 300 RainGuns at once. This zone-wise control is what makes a single 10HP pumpset workable over the full 3.5km reach.
The pillar structures supporting the RainGuns along the road are built from concrete and PVC, specifically to withstand the vibrations from stone crusher machinery and heavy vehicle movement in the area, ensuring long-lasting operation without structural failure.
Thumba's relationship with the association goes back to 2004, with more than 50 dust control projects completed for individual member units over that period. The 4.5km road dust suppression project — with 100 RainGuns erected in 2022 and a further 200 RainGuns added in 2026, for 300 RainGuns total — was handed over to Thumba as a direct result of that long-standing trust.
