Smooth soft starting for solar and grid pumpsets, constant 415 V output on unstable lines, and remote control by mobile, for motors up to 100 HP.
1. VFD's (Solar Pump Drives) 2. AC Drives 3. GSM & Wi-Fi Controlled Drives
VFD's are electronic devices used to start solar pumpsets. Unlike a DOL or Star Delta starter, a VFD starts the motor with a smooth, slow start using the variable frequency concept. It is one of the 100% successful starting methods for all submersible, open well, monoblock and normal squirrel cage motors up to 100 HP.
For the last 50 years, farmers and industry have started motors like this:
| Motor Size (Three Phase) | Traditional Starter |
|---|---|
| Up to 7.5 HP | DOL (Direct On Line) |
| 10 to 50 HP | Star-Delta |
| Above 50 HP | Oil immersed Star-Delta or complicated resistance type starters |
All of these need more maintenance and bring high service costs. To avoid these issues, variable motor speed control was introduced in industry in the early 2000s, and it proved successful. It saves the motor from the sudden starting load, which is about 2.5 times the running load, by starting slowly from 100 to 2,800 RPM within programmed timings of a few seconds.
At the same time, solar pumpsets were becoming popular in agriculture and faced the same starting issues. Solar panels produce only DC (direct current), which must be converted into AC (alternating current) for the pumpset, and the motor also needs a smooth start. These three things are very important to run solar pumpsets without any issues.
For example: a 5 HP solar pumpset
If you need a 5 HP open well or bore well submersible motor for your agriculture field or a commercial application, for better performance at maximum yield (up to 750 LPM) or maximum depth (up to 1,000 feet), you need a 6 to 7 kW solar system with a 7.5 kVA VFD for surge protection from various field factors.
We can run this 5 HP even on a 4,800 W solar array, but overall performance is not good in low light or cloudy weather. So selecting the solar array capacity and a compatible VFD are the key factors in the solar pumping sector. See our solar pumpsets →
An AC drive is a motor starter that gives a constant voltage to three phase motors, even when the input voltage fluctuates.
In some areas the input voltage is not always stable, or one phase fails because of rain or shift current issues. Normally you cannot run your motor when this happens. But with an AC drive in the circuit, you get a 415 V output always. It converts the AC current into DC first, then converts it back to a constant three phase 415 V AC, so the motor runs smoothly without voltage problems.
One more facility: you can reduce or increase motor RPM by changing the motor frequency, to match your discharge and head needs in pumpsets, or for speed control in other industrial applications.
These are advanced VFD starters combined with a GSM mobile control facility and many extra features.
Why Wi-Fi?
In some agricultural fields, several pumpsets are used for pumping and for refilling open wells: one open well motor and two or more bore well motors in a single field, all connected to one or two grid or solar power units. Manual ON and OFF is very complicated here, and no labour is willing to come for this work.
If the farmer has only one grid connection with an allotted load limit, for example 5 HP, only one motor can run at a time. But in drought areas farmers drill one or two bore wells to refill the open well, so switching the motors ON and OFF becomes a big issue.
You can connect those 2 bore wells over a Wi-Fi network and use only one SIM card to control all three motors with a Wi-Fi controller device. A huge saving on multiple SIM card expenses.

A VFD is an electronic device that starts the motor smoothly and slowly using the variable frequency concept, unlike a DOL or Star Delta starter. It is one of the 100% successful starting methods for submersible, open well, monoblock and normal squirrel cage motors up to 100 HP. It ramps the motor from 100 to 2,800 RPM within programmed timings of a few seconds, saving it from starting loads of about 2.5 times the running load.
Solar panels produce only DC (direct current). The DC must be converted into AC (alternating current) for the pumpset, and the motor also needs a smooth start. A solar VFD takes 300 to 900 V DC from the panels, converts it to 300 to 415 V AC, and adds protections and timers, so AC solar pumpsets from 1 HP to 100 HP run without issues.
For a 5 HP open well or bore well submersible motor, we recommend a 6 to 7 kW solar system with a 7.5 kVA VFD for surge protection from field factors. A 5 HP can run on even a 4,800 W solar array, but overall performance is not good in low light or cloudy weather. Selecting the right array capacity and a compatible VFD is the key.
An AC drive is a motor starter that gives a constant voltage to three phase motors even when the input voltage fluctuates. It converts the incoming AC into DC first, then produces a constant three phase 415 V AC output, so the motor keeps running smoothly even with unstable phases or a phase failure. It also lets you increase or reduce motor RPM by changing the frequency.
Yes. GSM controlled VFD's and AC drives let you start or stop your pumpset from anywhere, and show running information such as RPM, Hz, voltage and ampere through your mobile network connection.
Where one open well motor and two or more bore well motors run in a single field, the bore wells can be connected over a Wi-Fi network to a Wi-Fi controller device. Only one SIM card is then needed to control all three motors, which saves the cost of multiple SIM cards and removes the need for manual ON and OFF.
