An Organic Dairy Farmer's Search for Better Fodder

Dr. Sampath of Tanjore, Tamil Nadu, is a passionate advocate of organic farming and Desi (indigenous) cow dairy farming. We first met him at our stall during the CODISSIA Agri Expo 2012 in Coimbatore. A few days later, he came directly to our Palani office to discuss a RainGun system for his dairy fodder cultivation.

Our team went to his farm straight away for a field study. The land totalled 2.5 acres, with a 10HP allotted load from the TNEB grid and a borewell fitted with a 6HP motor for its water source. Working to his requirements, we designed a permanent 1.5-inch RainGun system mounted on strong concrete pillars standing 10 feet tall.

A Truly Permanent, Zero-Shift System

The defining feature of Dr. Sampath's installation is convenience. Valves were grouped for every 4 RainGuns along the pathways only — so nothing ever needs to be shifted or moved between waterings. The farmer simply operates a valve on the underground pipeline to irrigate any section of the field. No dragging of pipes, no repositioning of guns, and minimal labour throughout the crop cycle.

From Mixed Crops to India's Highest Fodder Yield

In the early years, Dr. Sampath cultivated vegetables, greens, onion and banana under the system. Over time, as his dairy grew, he switched the farm entirely to fodder cultivation. The results have been remarkable: he now achieves 250 tons per acre of fodder per year — more than double the documented Indian average of 120 tons per acre, making his one of the highest fodder yields recorded in the country.

The RainGun system continues to work successfully in good condition even now, in 2026, driven by our own-make 10HP high-pressure motor. Thanks to the extremely high Super Napier yield, just 1 acre supplies green fodder for up to 60 dairy animals — a compact, self-sufficient model for organic Desi cow dairy farming.

Frequently Asked Questions

What fodder yield does Dr. Sampath achieve with the RainGun system?

Dr. Sampath achieves 250 tons per acre of Super Napier fodder per year on his Tanjore farm — more than double the documented Indian average of 120 tons per acre. The high, uniform yield lets a single acre supply green fodder for up to 60 dairy animals.

How many dairy animals can 1 acre of RainGun-irrigated fodder feed?

Because of the extremely high Super Napier yield, just 1 acre of Dr. Sampath's RainGun-irrigated fodder supplies green fodder for up to 60 dairy animals — making the RainGun system ideal for compact, self-sufficient Desi cow dairy operations.

Why use permanent concrete pillars for a RainGun system?

On Dr. Sampath's farm we fixed a 1.5-inch permanent RainGun system on strong concrete pillars at a height of 10 feet, with valves grouped for every 4 RainGuns along the pathways. Nothing needs to be moved between irrigations — the farmer simply operates a valve on the underground pipeline, eliminating manual shifting of equipment and saving labour.

Can a RainGun fodder system run on limited power and a single borewell?

Yes. Dr. Sampath's 2.5-acre farm runs on a 10HP allotted TNEB grid load plus a borewell with a 6HP motor. Thumba's own-make high-pressure 10HP motor drives the whole permanent RainGun system, which is still working in good condition in 2026 — over a decade after erection in 2013.

Is RainGun irrigation suitable for organic and natural farming?

Dr. Sampath runs a fully organic operation combining natural farming with Desi cow dairy. Over the years he moved from vegetables, greens, onion and banana to dedicated fodder cultivation, all under the same RainGun system — which keeps the soil aerated and evenly watered, supporting healthy organic growth without canals or ponds.
