Thumba 7.5 HP chaff cutter with pulverizer — modified in 2022 to pulverize sugarcane trash to 3–5 mm for an Old Delhi dairy farm

The 7.5 HP chaff cutter with pulverizer — supplied as a standard machine in 2018, rebuilt to a new purpose in 2022.

2018: A Standard Machine for a Standard Job

A big dairy farmer from Old Delhi purchased our 7.5 HP chaff cutter with pulverizer in 2018 to chaff green fodder for his 100-animal dairy farm. For several years it did exactly that, and he ran the dairy successfully on conventional feed inputs.

Then feed prices rose. With input costs climbing, he went looking for other feed sources at cheaper prices — and found one that almost nobody was using.

20 Tons a Day, Lying on the Street

He found that sugarcane trash is a very good nutritional feed source for livestock, at almost zero price in the market. Every day in Delhi, more than 20 tons of sugarcane trash is left as unwanted waste on the streets.

That discarded material carries more than 6% protein and other essential nutritioncheap and good fodder for cows and goats. The catch is particle size: to be usable as feed it must be pulverized down to 3 to 5 mm.

Where the Standard Machine Fell Short

He tried it with our machine as supplied, feeding the trash directly through the top input. It worked, after a fashion — but he faced many issues getting maximum output. Sugarcane trash is long, fibrous and light, and it behaves nothing like the green fodder or grain the standard configuration was built around.

Rather than tell him to buy something else, we asked him to send the machine in.

2022: We Rebuilt the Machine He Already Owned

He contacted us directly to alter the machine for this purpose and sent it to our works. We altered it based on his demand and returned it to his farm. It now successfully makes fine sugarcane trash fodder for his dairy.

He was very impressed with our support in redesigning a standard machine around a requirement it was never sold for — four years after he bought it. We would rather modify a machine that is already on a farm than sell a second one that duplicates it.

Fine pulverizing of fibrous waste is a problem we work on across sectors — see our fine shredding and screening machines, which reduce biomass to 5–10 mm for CBG plants. For another dairy that built its own feed strategy around the pulverizer, see Mr. Shanmugam at Palladam.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can sugarcane trash be used as cattle feed?

Yes. Sugarcane trash carries more than 6% protein along with other essential nutrition, making it cheap and good fodder for cows and goats. Our Old Delhi customer feeds it to a 100-animal dairy. The condition is particle size — it has to be pulverized down to 3 to 5 mm before livestock can make proper use of it.

What size should sugarcane trash be pulverized to for animal feed?

3 to 5 mm. Above that size the material is too coarse to be useful as fodder. Reaching that size consistently on a high volume of fibrous trash is exactly what our Old Delhi customer's machine had to be modified to do.

Can Thumba modify a machine I already own?

Yes. This customer bought his 7.5 HP chaff cutter with pulverizer in 2018 and came back in 2022 with a new requirement the standard machine was never designed for. He sent the machine to our works, we altered it to his demand and returned it to his farm, where it now makes fine sugarcane trash fodder successfully. Talk to us before buying a second machine — a modification is often the cheaper answer.

Why could the standard machine not pulverize sugarcane trash as supplied?

He first tried feeding sugarcane trash directly into the machine through the top input, and ran into repeated problems getting maximum output. Sugarcane trash is long, fibrous and light, which behaves very differently from green fodder or grain going through the same machine. The alteration addressed how the material is taken in and reduced, not just how fine it is cut.

How much does sugarcane trash cost compared with conventional cattle feed?

Almost nothing. More than 20 tons a day is left as unwanted waste on Delhi's streets. Our customer moved to it precisely because conventional feed input prices had risen — the same nutrition at close to zero raw material cost, with the machine doing the work of turning waste into fodder.

Got a Feed Source Nobody Else Is Using?

Tell us what material you want to turn into fodder and the particle size you need. If no standard machine does it, we will alter one — including a machine you already own.
