Thumba three phase high speed chaff cutter cum pulverizer — the machine type supplied to Mr. Shanmugam's desi cow dairy at Putherichal, Palladam in 2008

Our three phase high speed chaff cutter cum pulverizer — the machine family Mr. Shanmugam's 5 HP unit belongs to.

A Desi Milk Dairy Built for the Tirupur Market

In 2008, Mr. Shanmugam started his dairy farm at Putherichal village, near Palladam, Tamil Nadu, with 30 desi animals. The business plan was built around the nearby Tirupur city milk market — selling directly to customers as pure desi milk rather than through an intermediary. A dairy priced on the quality of its milk lives or dies on the quality and cost of its feed, and that is where his search for a machine began.

He approached us at our stall at the CODISSIA Trade Fair Agri Expo in Coimbatore, looking for a high speed chaff cutter cum pulverizer — one machine that could both chaff green fodder and, using the pulverizing facility, let him make his own concentrated feed.

His Own Feed Preparation Concept

Mr. Shanmugam did not simply buy a machine — he built a feed strategy around it. Instead of buying ready-mixed concentrated feed at market rates, he sources cheap local ingredients as raw material and mixes his own ration on the pulverizer. That single decision reduced his feed cost, the largest running expense on almost every dairy farm, and gave him full control over what his desi cows are fed.

In a single 5-hour run he prepares 400 to 500 kg of his own concentrated feed — enough to cover a full week for his 30-cow herd. One afternoon a week on the machine replaces a weekly feed purchase.

The Machine: 5 HP, Three Phase, Two Jobs

The unit supplied in 2008 is our 5 HP three phase high speed chaff cutter with pulverizer. It chaffs fodder at 1.2 tons per hour and pulverizes at 150 kg per hour, running 3 chaffing blades and 3 pulverizing blades. Despite daily use across both duties, the cutting blades need sharpening only once every six months — the hardened ferrous alloy blades hold their edge through a full season of work.

Mr. Shanmugam's dairy is one of two early chaff cutter customers we still point new dairy farmers to — the other being Thiru Kamalanadhan of Pappampatti, Palani, who bought our very first high speed chaff cutter in 2007. Between them they cover both ends of the range: a 2 HP single phase machine for a small mixed farm, and this 5 HP three phase machine for a commercial desi milk dairy.

If your farm has no three phase connection, see what we built for Mr. Sediappu at Puthur, Karnataka — a heavy duty 2.2 HP single phase motor that reaches 2 tons per hour of chaff cutting on an ordinary 220 V supply. And for commercial silage making at scale, see Achoos Dairy at Kollam, Kerala — a 7.5 HP machine chaffing corn fodder to 16 mm at 4 tons per hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chaff cutter cum pulverizer make concentrated cattle feed?

Yes — that is exactly how Mr. Shanmugam uses his machine. The pulverizer side grinds locally bought raw materials into a concentrated feed mix, while the chaff cutter side handles green fodder. He prepares 400 to 500 kg of his own concentrated feed in about 5 hours, which covers one full week for his 30-cow dairy.

What is the output of a 5 HP three phase chaff cutter cum pulverizer?

The 5 HP three phase model supplied to Mr. Shanmugam in 2008 chaffs fodder at 1.2 tons per hour and pulverizes at 150 kg per hour. It carries 3 chaffing blades and 3 pulverizing blades.

How often do chaff cutter blades need sharpening?

On Mr. Shanmugam's machine the cutting blades are sharpened once every 6 months only, despite daily use for both fodder chaffing and feed pulverizing. The machine uses hardened ferrous alloy blades — 3 for chaffing and 3 for pulverizing — which hold their edge far longer than ordinary blades.

Is a 5 HP chaff cutter enough for a 30-cow dairy farm?

Yes. Mr. Shanmugam runs a 30 desi cow dairy entirely on one 5 HP three phase machine, using it for both daily green fodder chaffing and weekly concentrated feed preparation. At 1.2 tons per hour of chaffing capacity, a herd of that size needs only a short daily run.

Does preparing your own cattle feed reduce dairy farm costs?

It did for Mr. Shanmugam. Instead of buying ready-made concentrated feed, he sources cheap local ingredients and mixes them himself on the pulverizer — cutting his feed cost significantly while keeping full control over what goes into the ration. Feed is the largest running cost on most dairy farms, so this is usually where a machine pays for itself.
