Heavy Duty 2.2 HP Single Phase Chaff Cutter cum Pulverizer · Supplied 2014 · 20 Cow Dairy · Puthur, Karnataka
He had only a 220 V single phase supply. So we built the motor around it.
Mr. Srivikrama Sediappu of Puthur, Karnataka is an official and a farmer, running a 20-animal dairy alongside his job. He approached us wanting a high speed chaff cutter cum pulverizer with maximum output — the biggest machine he could put to work.
There was one problem. His farm had only a single phase 220 V grid supply. Conventional advice would have been to scale down the machine, or wait for a three phase connection. We did neither. Our team carried out a field study at his farm, and then went back and built the motor around the power he actually had.
The hard part of driving a high speed chaff cutter is not running it — it is starting it. The cutting drum demands very high initial torque to spin up, which is exactly where ordinary single phase motors give up. We manufactured a heavy duty 2.2 HP single phase motor specially designed for that high initial torque demand, so the machine reaches its standard 1700 RPM on single phase power alone — from a modest supply.
With that motor, our world class machine design and our self feeding cutting technology, the result was 2 tons per hour of green fodder chaff cutting on ordinary single phase 220 V power.
To our knowledge this is the highest output single phase chaff cutter anywhere — the first of its kind. More than a decade after we built it, no other single phase chaff cutter has beaten that output.
The same machine pulverizes maize for feed. Output depends on how fine you want the grind — 80 kg per hour through a 5 mm screen, or 60 kg per hour through a 3 mm screen. Interchangeable pulverizer screens let a farmer match the grind to the ration rather than the other way round.
Mr. Sediappu was very happy with the machine and went on to recommend it to many nearby dairy farmers — several of whom became customers on the strength of what they saw running on his farm.

Mr. Sediappu's machine is the high water mark of our single phase range. If your farm has only a domestic 220 V supply, see also Thiru Kamalanadhan's 2 HP single phase machine from 2007, still running after 19 years — or, for three phase farms, Mr. Shanmugam's 5 HP feed making setup at Palladam and Achoos Dairy's 7.5 HP silage machine in Kerala.
Yes. The machine we built for Mr. Sediappu at Puthur, Karnataka chaffs green fodder at 2 tons per hour on an ordinary single phase 220 V supply. It combines a heavy duty 2.2 HP single phase motor with our self feeding cutting technology — the highest single phase chaff cutting output we know of, and a level no other single phase machine has matched since.
A high speed chaff cutter demands very high initial torque to spin up its cutting drum. Ordinary single phase motors stall or never reach working speed. For Mr. Sediappu we made a heavy duty 2.2 HP single phase motor designed specifically for that high initial torque demand, so the machine reaches its standard 1700 RPM on single phase power alone.
Yes, screen size directly sets the output. On maize, the machine gives 80 kg per hour with a 5 mm screen and 60 kg per hour with a 3 mm screen — the finer the grind, the lower the throughput. Various pulverizer screens are available so you can match the grind to your feed ration.
No. Many farms — like Mr. Sediappu's in Karnataka — have only a single phase 220 V grid supply. Rather than telling him to wait for a three phase connection, we engineered the motor around the supply he already had. Three phase models are available for larger outputs, but single phase power is no longer a ceiling on capacity.
Comfortably. Mr. Sediappu's 20-animal dairy runs entirely on this one machine for both green fodder chaffing and maize pulverizing. At 2 tons per hour of chaffing, a 20-cow herd's daily fodder is done in a short run. He was happy enough with it to recommend the machine to many nearby dairy farmers.
Tell us your herd size and what supply you have. We'll size the machine — and if needed the motor — around your farm, just as we did for Mr. Sediappu in Karnataka.
