Thumba 7.5 HP three phase high speed chaff cutter cum pulverizer — the machine type supplied to Achoos Dairy, Kollam, Kerala for corn silage making

Our 7.5 HP three phase high speed chaff cutter cum pulverizer — the machine family Achoos Dairy's silage unit belongs to.

A Silage Business, Not Just a Dairy

Mr. Achoos of Kollam, Kerala is an advanced dairy farmer who runs his 45-cow operation on modern technology — and alongside it, a silage business. He reached us in 2015 through a corn silage raw material supplier in Sathyamangalam, Tamil Nadu, looking for a high output chaff cutter capable of 3 tons per hour for his silage making process. His requirement was 10 to 15 tons of chaffed corn fodder per day.

We supplied a 7.5 HP high speed chaff cutter cum pulverizer with a 4 ton per hour chaffing capacity — deliberately above the 3 tons per hour he asked for. Silage work is unforgiving on timing: a lorry load has to be chaffed and packed before it starts to deteriorate, so the machine needed headroom rather than to be run flat out every single day.

From an 84-Day Corn Crop to a Packed Silage Bag

Mr. Achoos buys his raw material as a full lorry load of 10 to 15 tons from Tamil Nadu, taking the corn fodder at the 84-day stage — the point where sugar and moisture are right for fermentation. It is then chaffed to 16 mm pieces and packed for storage.

Why the Cut Shape Matters as Much as the Cut Size

This is the part most buyers overlook. On our machine, every stem is cut into irregular broken 16 mm pieces — not clean round discs — while the leaf comes out at 3 to 4 inches, thanks to the high speed self feeding system. Broken, irregular stem pieces expose more cut surface and pack far more tightly than round-cut pieces, which is exactly what fermentation needs.

That particle profile is excellently suited to high quality silage making, ready within 45 days of storage. And the throughput matches the ambition: only 5 hours are needed to cut 20 tons of corn fodder on the 7.5 HP machine.

The Same Machine Makes His Concentrated Feed

Silage is only half the job. Mr. Achoos also uses the pulverizing facility on the same machine for concentrated feed preparation, mixed to his own concept. One machine therefore covers both sides of the ration — the bulk forage and the concentrate — for a 45-animal herd plus a commercial silage operation.

Achoos Dairy is the largest of our documented chaff cutter installations, and the only one built around a commercial silage operation. For the storage side of silage making see our silage fodder storage solutions; for smaller herds, see Mr. Shanmugam's 5 HP feed making setup at Palladam or, for farms with no three phase supply, Mr. Sediappu's 2.2 HP single phase machine in Karnataka.

Frequently Asked Questions

What cut size is best for corn silage making?

Achoos Dairy chaffs its corn fodder to 16 mm. On our machine the stems come out as irregular broken 16 mm pieces rather than clean round discs, and the leaf comes through at 3 to 4 inches — a mix produced by the high speed self feeding system. That particle profile packs and ferments well, giving high quality silage within 45 days of storage.

How long does it take to chaff 20 tons of corn fodder?

About 5 hours on the 7.5 HP high speed chaff cutter cum pulverizer supplied to Achoos Dairy. The machine is rated at 4 tons per hour of chaffing — one full working day covers a 10 to 15 ton lorry load of corn fodder comfortably.

What size chaff cutter do I need for a silage business?

Mr. Achoos asked for 3 tons per hour to cover a 10 to 15 ton daily silage requirement. We supplied the 7.5 HP model rated at 4 tons per hour, so the machine has headroom above his stated need rather than running at its limit every day — important when a whole lorry load has to be chaffed and packed before it deteriorates.

At what stage should corn fodder be harvested for silage?

Achoos Dairy buys its corn fodder at the 84-day stage, sourced by the full lorry load from Tamil Nadu. Cutting at that stage gives the sugar and moisture balance needed for good fermentation — chaffed to 16 mm and packed, it makes high quality silage in 45 days.

Can the same machine make concentrated feed as well as silage chaff?

Yes. Alongside silage chaffing, Mr. Achoos uses the pulverizing facility on the same machine to prepare his own concentrated feed to his own formulation. One machine covers both the bulk forage and the concentrate side of the ration.

Making Silage? Size the Machine to the Lorry Load.

Tell us your daily tonnage and cut size, and we'll recommend a chaff cutter with headroom above it — just as we did for Achoos Dairy in 2015.
