Thumba dairy farm equipment — the full range of machines running on Mr. Vivek's 30 desi cow farm at Anamalai, Pollachi

Feed, hygiene, waste and climate — the four sides of a working dairy, all covered on one farm.

One Machine, Then the Whole Farm

Mr. Vivek is a well known desi cow farmer in the Anamalai and Pollachi region of Tamil Nadu. He first came to us in 2016 through a dairy farmers' friend circle — the way most of our dairy customers still find us — to buy a chaff cutter cum pulverizer.

That one machine turned into a working relationship. Today his farm runs on Thumba machines and technologies across all four sides of dairy operation — feed preparation, shed hygiene, waste handling and climate control. It is the most complete Thumba installation on any single dairy farm we have documented, which makes it a useful reference for anyone planning a farm from scratch.

1 Chaff Cutter cum Pulverizer — 2 HP, Then 5 HP

Thumba 5 HP chaff cutter cum pulverizer, 3 tons per hour — the machine Mr. Vivek upgraded to after expanding to 30 cows

Our chaff cutter cum pulverizer is the unique machine for modern dairy farms — chaffing green fodder and pulverizing concentrate feed from a single unit. Mr. Vivek's first purchase was the 2 HP single phase model.

Later, after expanding to 30 cows, he came back for a 5 HP machine rated at 3 tons per hour — not because the first one failed, but for speedy and convenient operation at the larger herd size. Still today, in 2026, it works perfectly.

2 Dairy Dung Cleaning Pump — 1.5 HP

Thumba 1.5 HP dairy dung cleaning pump — washes Mr. Vivek's 20-animal shed in 7 to 10 minutes on 400 litres of water

For shed cleaning he bought our 1.5 HP dairy dung cleaning pump, which washes a 20-animal shed in 7 to 10 minutes using only 400 litres of water for the whole daily clean.

An animal wash nozzle is supplied alongside the floor nozzle, so the same pump washes the cows themselves — important on a desi cow farm where hygiene shows up directly in milk quality.

3 Sewage Mud Pump — 1 HP

Thumba 1 HP sewage mud pump — moves dung and urine slurry from Mr. Vivek's septic tank at 20,000 litres per hour

Washing the shed only moves the problem unless you can move the slurry. After the shed and animals are washed, all the dung and urine collects in a septic tank.

From there our special-type 1 HP sewage mud pump clears it easily — 20,000 litres per hour discharge with 35 mm solid handling capacity, so dung, fibre and straw pass through without jamming the impeller.

4 Dairy Mist Cooling System — 30 Nozzles

Thumba dairy mist cooling system — 30 nozzles with auto control panel on Mr. Vivek's farm at Anamalai

The most interesting project on this farm is the mist cooling system. In total 30 mist nozzles are installed, running under an automatic control panel.

It works fine and reduces temperature by more than 10°C on hot summer days, holding a favourable temperature across the farm. Heat stress cuts feed intake and milk yield long before an animal looks distressed — which is why cooling pays for itself faster than most farmers expect.

If you are planning a dairy from scratch, Mr. Vivek's farm is the clearest template we can point to — and the order he bought in (feed first, then hygiene, then waste, then cooling) is a sensible sequence for anyone building up over time. Compare it with Mr. Shanmugam's feed-focused 30-cow dairy at Palladam or Achoos Dairy's silage operation in Kerala.

Frequently Asked Questions

What equipment does a modern 30-cow dairy farm need?

Mr. Vivek's 30 desi cow farm at Anamalai runs four systems that between them cover feed, hygiene, waste and climate: a chaff cutter cum pulverizer for fodder and concentrate, a 1.5 HP dung cleaning pump for shed washing, a 1 HP sewage mud pump to move the collected slurry, and a mist cooling system to hold shed temperature down in summer. He started with only the chaff cutter in 2016 and added the rest over time.

How much water does daily cattle shed cleaning use?

Only 400 litres a day on Mr. Vivek's farm. The 1.5 HP dairy dung cleaning pump washes his 20-animal shed in 7 to 10 minutes using a high pressure jet, so the water does the work instead of volume and manual scraping. An animal wash nozzle is supplied alongside the floor nozzle for washing the cows themselves.

What happens to the dung and urine after the shed is washed?

On Mr. Vivek's farm everything washed off the shed floor and the animals collects in a septic tank. From there a 1 HP Thumba sewage mud pump moves the mixture out at 20,000 litres per hour, handling 35 mm solids — dung, fibre and straw — without jamming. That is what makes the whole cleaning routine practical day after day.

How much does a mist cooling system reduce dairy shed temperature?

On Mr. Vivek's farm, 30 mist nozzles running under an automatic control panel bring the shed down by more than 10°C on hot summer days, holding a favourable temperature for the herd. Cooling matters commercially: heat stress cuts feed intake and milk yield before any visible sign of distress in the animals.

When should a dairy farmer upgrade from a 2 HP to a 5 HP chaff cutter?

When the herd outgrows the daily run time. Mr. Vivek started with a 2 HP single phase chaff cutter cum pulverizer, then bought a 5 HP machine rated at 3 tons per hour once he expanded to 30 cows — not because the smaller machine failed, but for speed and convenience. Both machines are still working perfectly in 2026.
