Permanent RainGun irrigation system on sugarcane and turmeric farm, Omalur, Tamil Nadu

A Former Horticulture Officer Who Demanded the Best

In 2004, Mr. Rathinasamy — a former horticulture officer — approached Thumba Agro with a clear requirement: a permanent RainGun system for his 9.5-acre Sugarcane and Turmeric field at Thumbibadi, Omalur. As a horticulture professional, he understood irrigation deeply and had specifically chosen the RainGun system over drip or canal irrigation after evaluating the options.

After a complete field study, our team recommended a custom-designed 7.5 HP Multi-Stage motor to match the conditions of his 60-foot open well. The multi-stage design was essential to generate the head pressure required for a full-coverage RainGun radius at that depth. The system was installed as a permanent configuration — with fixed mainlines, permanent stands, and a fully automatic timer for night-time irrigation runs.

The result was a highly efficient, low-labour operation: one person alone could run irrigation across all 9.5 acres — no canals to manage, no ponds to maintain, no borewells to service. Mr. Rathinasamy used the system for many years, and it remains in full working condition today.

Unbeatable Yields — Recognised Across the Region

Mr. Rathinasamy achieved a peak yield of 64 Tonnes per acre in his 6.5-acre sugarcane field — well above the regional average. On his 3.5-acre groundnut section he achieved 1,150 kgs of dry groundnut per acre, and his turmeric plots yielded 3,000 kgs per acre. He was featured in a video documenting his results, which spread his farming methods widely in the Omalur region.

He became very popular in that region as a farmer who embraced advanced agriculture technologies to get unbeatable success yields. Farmers from neighbouring villages visited his fields to learn his methods — a testament to the visible difference that permanent RainGun irrigation makes on crop performance.

Dedication Until the End — and a System That Outlasted Him

Mr. Rathinasamy continued farming with dedication in his agriculture practices even through difficult paralysis health conditions in his later years, until his passing in 2012. His commitment to modern, productive farming never wavered. A tribute to his legacy: our RainGun system remains in working condition to this day — more than 22 years after installation, and still within its 50-year designed life span.

Design Life50 years (22 years completed — still working)

"Mr. Rathinasamy was a true agriculture pioneer. As a former horticulture officer, he knew exactly what he wanted — and our system delivered it. Even after his passing in 2012, the same system continues to irrigate the farm. That is what 50-year design life means in practice."

Why This System Stood Out

  • Custom 7.5 HP Multi-Stage motor — designed in-house to match the 60ft open well conditions
  • 50-year design life — 22 years already completed, still in working condition
  • Fully automatic timer — night-time irrigation runs without manual intervention
  • One-person operation — all 9.5 acres managed by a single operator
  • No canal, ponds, or borewells — simple, clean permanent system from a single open well
  • Multi-crop coverage — sugarcane, turmeric, and groundnut all irrigated from one installation
  • Peak yields — 64 T/acre sugarcane · 1,150 kgs/acre groundnut · 3,000 kgs/acre turmeric

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a single RainGun system irrigate multiple crops like sugarcane, turmeric, and groundnut?

Yes. A permanent RainGun system is designed to cover an entire farm holding even when different crops are grown in different sections. The Omalur installation covered 9.5 acres running sugarcane and turmeric, with the same system also used for groundnut cultivation — one motor, one pipeline, multiple crops irrigated efficiently.

What sugarcane yield is achievable with permanent RainGun irrigation?

Yields depend on soil type, variety, and management — but our installations consistently outperform flood-irrigated fields. At the Omalur farm, a peak of 64 tonnes per acre was achieved in sugarcane. Our first-ever installation in Salem achieved 84 T/acre. RainGun delivers uniform coverage without waterlogging, which is key to high cane yields.

How does a fully automatic irrigation timer help farmers?

An automatic timer lets the system run during night hours without manual intervention. This reduces evaporation losses significantly, lowers labour costs, and lets a single operator manage a large farm. At Omalur, the timer meant just one person could handle irrigation across all 9.5 acres — including night-time cycles when evaporation is minimal.

How long does a permanent RainGun system last?

Thumba Agro designs its permanent RainGun systems for a 50-year life span. Our custom-built multi-stage motors, quality mainline pipes, and galvanised stands are selected for durability in field conditions. The Omalur system, installed in 2004, is still in full working condition after 22 years — a living proof of this commitment.

Why is a multi-stage motor recommended for deep open wells?

A multi-stage motor stacks multiple impeller stages to generate higher pressure than a single-stage pump of the same power rating. For deep open wells — like the 60-foot well at Omalur — a multi-stage design ensures adequate pressure reaches the RainGun head for full coverage radius, regardless of the static water level.
